The Classical Association is an educational charity, dedicated to making classical subjects widely accessible.
The CA supports everyone who has an interest in the ancient world and its members are diverse – from the general public to academic specialists.
The Birmingham and Midlands Classical Association (BMCA) aims to engage with the wider Birmingham and Midlands community to share enthusiasm for classics, ancient history and archaeology with various events and initiatives: Lectures, Book Club, Athena's Owls, Conferences and Teacher Days.
It is based at the University of Birmingham, but we are not just for students and professors - we are for everyone!
In this lecture you will be introduced to some popular stories from ancient Egypt. We will explore some of the most common tropes and narrative devices known from the sources, reflecting on what they may reveal about the power of the written and spoken word.
The lecture is suitable for a general audience, aged 14+.
Register your interest in the event here.

Our book for November is Madeline Miller's Circe.
Known as the witch who turned Odysseus' companions to pigs, Miller gives us the fascinating perspective of Circe:
"Circe's tale is a vivid epic of family rivalry, love and loss - the inextinguishable song of a woman burning hot and bright in the darkness of a man's world".
*please note that this book club is for the grown ups. While content is not explicit, this is not aimed or designed for school students and we recommend a readership of 18+
From January 2025 the BMCA will relaunch Athena's Owls, stories and craft in the community for children ages 6+
